1. Preparation:

  • Disconnect the battery and secure the vehicle safely
  • Remove engine covers, valve cover(s), and timing components to expose the camshafts and timing gear
  • Rotate the engine by hand to Top Dead Center (TDC) on cylinder #1 (compression stroke). Use crankshaft timing marks to confirm alignment

2. Camshaft Alignment:

  • Locate the machined slots on the rear of both camshafts (exhaust and intake)
  • Slide the CTA 2884 Cam Alignment Tool into place across both slots. The tool should sit flush against the cylinder head and fit precisely in both grooves
  • If the tool does not fit cleanly, rotate the engine another full turn and try again

3. Perform Timing or Head Service:

  • With the camshafts locked in place, proceed with:
    • Timing chain or belt service
    • VVT actuator replacement
    • Cylinder head removal or reinstallation
  • Important: Always follow manufacturer specifications for timing mark positions and torque values

4. Tool Removal and Final Checks:

  • Once service is complete and timing components reinstalled, remove the cam alignment tool
  • Rotate the engine manually two full revolutions and re-check timing mark alignment and cam position
  • Reinstall engine covers and reconnect the battery. Start engine and confirm proper operation
